Social Hierarchy This behavior establishes an order within a population so that animals cooperate more and compete less.
Territory The area that an animal defends from other members of the same species
Territorial Imperative The behavior that occurs to defend an animal’s territory
Niche The role or job of an organism in its environment
Predator An animal that hunts and kills its food
Prey An animal that is hunted and killed for food
Scavenger An animal that eats dead or dying animals (does not hunt)
Cyclic Behavior Innate (inborn) behavior that occurs in a repeating pattern.
Nocturnal An animal is active at night.
Diurnal An animal is active during the day.
Migration A behavioral adaptation that causes the seasonal movement of animals to obtain their needs of life
Hibernation A behavioral adaptation that causes animals to become inactive in the winter months.
Estivation A behavioral adaptation that causes animals to become inactive in the hot or dry summer months.
