| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cell | the smallest unit of an organism that performs life functions |
| nucleus | a structure found in Eukaryotic cells that contain DNA and is responsible for controlling the activities of the cell |
| Eukarotic | a cell containing a membrane-enclosed nucleus and organelles |
| Prokaryotic | a cell lacking a nucleus or any membrane- enclosed organelles |
| unicellular | an organism made up of one single cell |
| multicellular | an organism made up of one single cell |
| classification | the process of grouping things based on similarities |
| taxonomy | the branch of science that formally names and classifies organisms by their structure function and relationship |
| Domain | the highest and largest rank of grouping |
| (Domain) Bacteria | Prokaryotic, single celled organism that lacks a nucleus in it's cell |
| (Domain) Archaea | Prokaryotic, single celled organism that lacks a nucleus in it's call and can live in extreme environments |
| (Domain) Eukarya | organisms with cells that contain a nucleus |
| Kingdom | taxonomic rank below Domain |
| autotroph | an organism that is able to makeT make it's owm food; known as a producer in the food chain |
| heterotroph | an organism that CAN NOT make it's owm food; known as a consumer in the food chain |
| asexual | a method of reproduction that requires only ONE parent 100% DNA from one parent |
| sexual | a method of reproduction that requires BOTH male and female parent.50% from ONE parent |
| cell theory | states that all living organisms are made up of 1 or more cells; cells are the basic unit of life and all cells come from other cells |
| (Kingdom) Archeabacteria | unicellular, asexual, auto and heterotroph, prokaryotic organism that live in EXTREME enviroments |
| (Kingdom)Eubacteria | unicellular, asexual, auto and heterotroph, prokaryotic organism that live in MODERATE enviroments |
| (Kingdom)Protista | uni and multicellular sexual or asexual auto and heterothophic eukaryotic organism that are microscopic |
| (Kingdom)Fungi | uni and multicelluar sexual or asexual heterotrophic eukaryotic organism; known as a decomposer in the food chain |
| (Kingdom)Plantae | multicellular sexual and asexual autotrophs eukaryotic organism; known as a producer in the food chain |
| (Kingdom)Animila | multicellular sexual and a sexual heterothrophs eukaryotic organisms; know as a consumer in the food chain |
