Volcanic Vocabulary

TermDefinition
ash plume a cloud made up of tiny rock pieces that shoot out of a volcano when it explodes
catastrophic extremely disastrous and sudden
debris the scattered pieces of something that has been broken or destroyed
glacial ice a large sheet of ice formed from layers of snow that do not melt and get pressed together
ice age a period in history when a large part of the Earth was covered with ice
landslide a sudden and quick movement of rocks and dirt down the side of a mountain or hill
molten rock rock that has been melted by high heat; lava
pumice a gray, lightweight volcanic rock that is full of small holes
pyroclastic flow a very hot mixture of rock, ash, and gas that races down the sides of an erupting volcano
smoldering burning and smoking slowly without flames
