Volcanic Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| ash plume | a cloud made up of tiny rock pieces that shoot out of a volcano when it explodes |
| catastrophic | extremely disastrous and sudden |
| debris | the scattered pieces of something that has been broken or destroyed |
| glacial ice | a large sheet of ice formed from layers of snow that do not melt and get pressed together |
| ice age | a period in history when a large part of the Earth was covered with ice |
| landslide | a sudden and quick movement of rocks and dirt down the side of a mountain or hill |
| molten rock | rock that has been melted by high heat; lava |
| pumice | a gray, lightweight volcanic rock that is full of small holes |
| pyroclastic flow | a very hot mixture of rock, ash, and gas that races down the sides of an erupting volcano |
| smoldering | burning and smoking slowly without flames |
