Our Solar System

TermDefinition
inner planets The four smaller, dense, rocky planets that are closest to the sun.
moon A celestial body that revolves around a body that is larger in mass.
outer planets The four larger, less dense planets that are furthest from the sun (gas giants).
Planet A celestial body that orbits the sun, is round due to its own gravity, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbital path.
Planetesimal A small body from which a planet originated in the early stages of the development of the solar system.
Protoplanet Bodies formed from the collision of planetesmials.
Sol The name of our star (the sun).
solar nebula A rotating cloud of dust and gas from which the sun and planets formed.
solar system The sun and all of the planets and other bodies that travel around it.
