Cycles

QuestionAnswer
Accumulation The process of increasing in quantity, number, or amount
Atmosphere The whole mass of air surrounding Earth
Carbon Cycle The movement of carbon on Earth by the processes of respiration and photosynthesis
Chrysalis The hardened outer layer of a butterfly during the pupa stage
Cocoon An envelope usually of silk which the larva of some insects (as moths) forms about itself and in which it passes the pupa stage
Complete Metamorphosis The type of development consisting of four distinct stages-- egg, larva, pupa, and adult
Condensation Physical change in matter from a gas to a liquid
Evaporation Physical change in matter from a liquid to a gas
Ground Water Water that collects in cracks and pores in underground soil and rock layers
Incomplete Metamorphosis The type of development consisting of three stages-- eggs, nymph, and adult
Molting To shed hair, feathers, outer skin, shell, or horns with the cast-off parts being replaced by a new growth
Nymph The stage of Incomplete Metamorphosis during which an insect eats and grows, and resembles a smaller version of the adult
Oxygen A gas produced by plants during photosynthesis that animals use for respiration
Photosynthesis The process by which plants make sugar (glucose) from water and from carbon dioxide in the air in the presence of light
Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet or hail that falls from clouds in the sky
Respiration A process by which animals use oxygen and food to make energy and carbon dioxide
Spring A source of water coming up from the ground
Surface Run-off Water from precipitation that drains into a gully that flows into a stream, which in turn flows into a river, lake, reservoir, estuary, wetland, or the ocean
Transpiration The process by which plants give off water vapor through the stomata (holes) in their leaves
