Chapter 7 vocab sections 1-4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 1 Crust | The thin and solid outermost layer of the Earth above the mantle. |
| 1 Mantle | The layer of rock between the Earth's crust and core. |
| 1 Core | The central part of the Earth below the mantle. |
| 1 Lithosphere | The solid, outer layer of the Earth that consists of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle. |
| 1 Asthenosphere | The soft layer of the mantle on which the tectonic plates move. |
| 1 Mesosphere | The strong, lower part of the mantle between the asthenosphere and the outer core. |
| 1 Tectonic Plate | A block of lithosphere that consists of the crust and the rigid, outermost part pf the mantle. |
| 2 Continental Drift | The hypothesis that states that the continents once formed a single landmass, broke up, and drifted to their present locations. |
| 2 Sea-Floor Spreading | The process by which new oceanic lithosphere forms as magma rises toward the surface and solidifies. |
| 3 Plate Tectonics | The theory that explains how large pieces of the earths outermost layer, called tectonic plates move and change shape. |
| 3 Convergent Boundary | The boundary formed by the collision of two lithospheric plates. |
| 3 Divergent Boundary | The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other. |
| 3 Transform Boundary | The boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally. |
| 4 Comprression | Stress that occurs when forces act to squeeze an object. |
| 4 Tension | Stress that occurs when forces act to stretch an object. |
| 4 Folding | The bending of rock layers due to stress. |
| 4 Fault | A break on a body of rock along which one block slides relative to another |
| 4 Uplift | The rising of regions of the Earth's crust to higher elevations. |
| 4 Subsidence | The sinking of regions of the Earth's crust to lower elevations |
| 4 Normal Fault | When rocks are pulled apart because of tension |
| 4 Reverse Fault | |
| 4 Strike-Slip Fault | |
| 4 Folded Mountains | |
| 4 Volcanic Mountains | |
| 4 Rift zone |
