| evolution | the process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that new species sometimes arise |
| variation | the occurrence of hereditary or non hereditary differences between different individuals of population |
| adaptation | an inherited trait that improves an individual’s ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment |
| artificial selection | the human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired traits |
| natural selection | the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individual do. |
| survival of the fittest | another way of saying natural selection |
| scientific law | statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes some aspects of the universe. |
| mutation | a change in the structure or amount of genetic material of an organism |
| charles darwin | was an English naturalist and geologist, best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. |
| common ancestor | any person to whom two or more persons claim descent |
| scientific theory | explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method |
| extinction | the death of every member of a species |
| fossil | the trace or remains of an organism that lived long ago,most commonly preserved in sedimentary rock |
| fossil record | the history of life in the geologic past as indicated by the traces or remains of living things |
