| Wai | water |
| kahawai | streams or aquifers that have broken to the surface |
| Mauka | top portion or uplands of the ahupua'a, which includes the upland native forests |
| Kula | the middle of the ahupua'a (plains & fertile fields) |
| Dike | a place in solid lava where water cannot filter |
| Water Table | area below the space in the lava that is "saturated" or "full of water". |
| Makai | the lower part of the ahupua'a, includes the coast and ocean |
| 'Auwai | a ditch lined with dirt , used to move water form one area to another |
| Perched Water | water that is trapped above the water table,and an important source of drinking water for people in the uplands |
| Aquifer | spaces in underground lava rock that store water |
| Ahupua'a | a pie shaped area of land that that protects fresh water as it flows from mountain to the sea. |
