Science Test

Test on form and function

QuestionAnswer
What is a structure? Anything made out of parts for a particular pourspose
What is the difference between form and function? Form - the shape and physical appearance of a structure. Function - the task or purpose of a structure
What is a Force? A push or a pull
What is gravity? The force of attraction between all objects
What is the difference between a applied force and a non-contact force? Non-contact force- forces that push or pull things without contact Applied Force- Forces that push or pull objects when forces come in contact with one another
What is the difference between mass and weight Mass- The quantity of matter in a object Weight - The force of gravity acting downward on an object.
What instrument is used to measure mass Balance
What instrument is used to measure weight Newton spring scale
What is used to measure mass Grams and Killograms
What is used to measure weight Newtons
Do forces have a magnitude and what dose it mean Yes and it means strength
Do forces have a direction and what are they Yes and up, down, left right, sideways
What is a load A force acting on a sturacture
What is a dead load The weight of the structure itself
What is a live load The weight of the objects that a structure supports
What is a dynamic load Loads on a structure that are caused by forces other the force of gravity
What is the difference between a solid, frame, and shell structure Solid- An object that uses solid construction to support loads. Frame- A network of parts that supports loads Shell- A hollow structure with a curved shape providing high strength and rigidity
What are combination structures a mix of' solid, frame, and shell components
Why is the human body a combination structure It is because the bones are the frame and the skull is like the shell
What is the difference between a internal and external force External Force- A force acting on an object or structure from the outside. Internal Force - A force acting between two parts of a body
What is the difference between point of application and plane of application Plain of application - An imaginary flat surface through which the applied force passes Point of application - The location on an object where the force is applied
What is tension An internal force pulling the particles of an object apart.
What is compression An internal force that presses or squeezes the particles of an object together.
What is torsion Internal twisting forces created in an object as a result of a twisting motion being applied to the object.
What is shear Forces acting in an object as a result of pushes and pulls in opposite directions which usually results in rips or tears in an object.
What are 2 examples of tension Jumping on a trampoline and Using a skipping rope
What are 2 examples of compression Stepping on the soul of you shoe and kicking a soccer ball
What are 2 examples of torsion A skater twisting in a jump and when someone is squeezing the water out of a washcloth
What are 2 examples of shear When wind blows on a tree and causes it to tear and rip and tearing you acl
