Earth Science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| parallelism | the earths axis at any place in its orbit is parallel to the axis in any other place in earths orbit |
| water cycle | earth system in which water is continually moving from the atmosphere to the earth and from the earth to the atmosphere |
| ground water | water that is found under the earths surface as the result of infiltration and storage |
| runoff | water that doesn't infiltrate the soil storage area and flows over the land surface to lakes, streams, and oceans |
| porosity | percent of open space in a volume of a certain material |
| inclination | center of the earth between the north and south poles, about which the earth rotates |
| permeability | rate at which moisture passes through a material |
| zone of aeration | portion of ground water through which water passes until the water reaches the zone of saturation |
| zone of saturation | portion of ground with an upper boundary called the water table |
| water table | top of zone of saturation within the ground surface of the earth |
| capillarity | upward movement of water against the force of gravity in a narrow space (such as a tube, plant vessel, or fine sand particles) |
| watershed | land from which water drains into a stream |
| drainage basin | area drained by a river system |
| stream discharge | measurement of amount of water passing a certain point in a stream in a certain amount of time |
| stream bed | interface of the water and bottom of a stream, including the rock particles and bottom material |
| surplus water | surface water that neither evaporates nor infiltrates, but is runoff |
| base flow | water moving from the local water table into streams |
| earth revolution | orbiting of the earth around the sun |
| earth rotation | the spinning of the earth around its axis |
| solar electromagnetic spectrum | full range of wavelengths emitted from the sun with the maximum intensity occurring in the visible region |
| insolation | incoming solar radiation; suns energy that transmits through earths atmosphere |
| angle of insolation | angle that the rays of the sun hit the surface of the earth |
| inclination | |
