TermDefinition
Asteroid Belt located between Mars and Jupiter; consists of thousands of rocky fragments in orbit around the sun
Comets a mass of rock, ice, dust and gas in orbit around the sun
Dwarf Planets an object that has enough gravity to pull itself into a round shape but can NOT clear its path and is NOT a moon
Exoplanets a planet in another solar system
Gas Giants planets made of mostly frozen hydrogen and helium such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune; also called outer planets
Inferior Planets the planets between Sun and Earth; Mercury and Venus
Jovian Planets another name for Gas Giants or outer planets
Kuiper Belt collection of frozen rocks at the edge of our solar system, beyond Neptune
Moon a naturally occurring object or satellite surrounding a planet
Oort Cloud a spherical cloud surrounding our solar system that contains many small ice bodies
Planet a large solid body that shines by reflecting sunlight and revolves in a stable orbit; must be large enough that its gravity pulls it into a round shape and must be dominant enough to clear its path in orbit
Retrograde Rotation rotation from east to west in the opposite direction as most other planets; “backward rotation”; Venus has retrograde rotation
Sedna the farthest known object in our solar system at 8 billion miles from Earth
Superior Planets planets further from the Sun than Earth; Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus
Terrestrial Planets the planets made mainly of rock such as Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars; also called the inner planets
