Gr.7 Form&Function

QuestionAnswer
What is a structure? Anything made of parts put together for a particular purpose.
What are the 2 types of structures? Human-made and found in nature
What is form? The shape and physical appearance of a structure.
What is function? The task or purpose of a structure.
What is a force? A push or a pull.
What is gravity? The force of attraction between all objects.
What is a applied force? Forces that push or pull objects when objects come in contact with one another.
What is a non-contact force? Forces that push or pull things without contact.
What is mass? The quantity of matter in an object.
What do we use to measure mass and weight? A balance and a newton spring scale.
What is weight? The force of gravity acting downward on an object.
What units are used to measure mass? Grams and kilograms.
What units are used to measure weight? Newtons.
What are the 5 direction of forces? up, down, left, right and sideways
What does magnitude describe? The strength of the force.
What is a dead load? The weight of the structure itself.
What is a live load? The weight of the objects that a structure supports.
What is a dynamic load? Loads on a structure that are caused by forces other the force of gravity.
What is a solid structure? An object that uses solid construction to support loads.
What are 3 examples of a solid structure? A concrete dam, wooden telephone pole and a marble statue.
What is a frame structure? A network of parts that support loads.
What are 3 examples of a frame structure? A goalies net, a spider web network of steal or wooden beams.
What is a shell structure? A hollow structure with a curved shape providing high strength and rigidity.
What are 3 examples of a shell structure? A birds beak, a pop can and a bike helmet.
What is a combination structure? Give an example of one. A mix of solid, frame and/or shell components. This is why the human body is considered a combination structure.
What is an internal force? A force acting between two parts of a body.
What is an external force? A force acting on an object or structure from the outside.
What is the point of application? The location on an object where the force is applied.
What is the plane of application? An imaginary flat surface through which the applied force passes.
What is tension? An internal force pulling the particles of an object apart.
What is compression? An internal force that presses or squeezes the particles of an object together.
What is torsion? Internal twisting forces created in an object as a result of a twisting motion being applied to the object.
What is shear? Forces acting in an object as a result of pushes and/or pulls in opposite directions; usually results in rips or tears in a object.
What are 2 examples of tension? a stretched skipping rope, a trampoline
What are 2 examples of compression? when you kick a soccer ball, stepping on the sole of your shoe
What are 2 examples of torsion? a wash cloth being wrung out, a doorknob being twisted
What are 2 examples of shear? scissors, a strong wind blowing over a tree
