Succession Review
Ecological succession terms and concepts.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| equilibrium | the population of each species of the community is in balance with one another |
| disturbance | catastrophic event occurring within an ecosystem such as wildfire, hurricane, flood, extreme drought, volcanic eruption, human habitat destruction and glacial action. |
| succession | a series of predictable changes to a community that occur over time until a new climax community is established |
| primary succession | succession beginning with exposed solid rock, with no layer of soil in which plants can start growing |
| secondary succession | succession beginning with an existing layer of soil in place |
| primary succession disturbances | volcanic eruptions with lava flows, receding glaciers leaving bare rock, and newly uncovered land caused by tectonic uplift or dropping sea levels. |
| secondary succession disturbances | wild fires, human habitat destruction such as the clear-cutting of a forest, extended droughts or floods |
| pioneer species | the first species of plants to grow in the succession process |
| thousands of years | the length of time possibly needed to go from pioneer species to climax community in primary succession |
| 10 - 200 years | the length of time possibly needed to go from pioneer species to climax community in secondary succession |
| lichen | small plants that have the ability to grow on rocks and slowly break-down the rocks to produce soil |
| climax community | A stable group of plants and animals that is the end result of the succession process |
