Changes in Earth

| core | deepest layer of the Earth |
| focus | underground point where an earthquake first starts |
| fossils | remains of once-living things that have been preserved |
| crust | layer of earth that includes land and ocean floor |
| mold fossil | an imprint made by the outside of a dead plant or animal |
| tectonic plates | continent-sized slabs that make up the crust and upper mantle |
| cast fossil | a fossil formed when minerals that fill a mold have the same shape as the original living thing |
| earthquake | shaking of the earth's crust |
| trace fossil | fossils that show how long-dead animals changed their environments |
| epicenter | point on Earth's surface right above the focus of an earthquake |
| magma chamber | an underground pool below the volcano that holds the magma |
| crater | large basin formed at the top of a volcano when it falls in on itself |
| vent | the rocky tube in a volcano through which magma rises toward the surface |
