Why are the same fossils found on different continents? The continents were once connected.
The oldest fossils are found where? In the deepest layers of the Earth.
What information can a geologist find out from a fossil that is a millions of years old? 1. The relative age of the fossil. 2. Evidence of the type of plants that once grew in the area. 3. Changes in the environment of the Earth.
Give an example of Earth processes that cause changes on the Earth's surface? * Movement of tectonic plates * tsunamis * weathering and erosion * earthquakes * volcanoes *glacier movement * floods
Where do earthquakes mostly occur? Along the borders of the tectonic plates.
How do the tectonic plates move? The, hot, convecting mantle moves them.
Name the inner most layer of the Earth. Inner core
Name the outer most layer of the Earth. Crust
Name the layer of the Earth that comes after the inner core. Outer core
What layer of Earth lies below the crust? Mantle
What can geologists conclude about Iowa since fossils of sea coral were found there? Millions of years ago an ocean covered Iowa.
What makes an earthquake? When tectonic plates rub together. (transform boundary)
What makes a mountain? When two continental plates collide. (convergent boundary)
What makes a rift? When two plate move apart. (divergent boundaries)
