Definitions

TermDefinition
Theory of evolution The concept that the physical universe began w/out God and has changed by random processes, over a period of time, into what we observe today.
Biological evolution The supposed gradual change of one kind of organism into another kind of organism into another kind of organism; occurs over many generations.
Theory of Inheritance of acquired The theory that physical changes caused by an organism's environment can be passed on to offspring.
Characteristics Arranging of organism's into groups.
Theory of natural selection The idea that only those organisms best suited for their environment will survive and reproduce, thus causing certain traits to become more common among a population.
Mutation theory of evolution The belief that mutations produce the source of change for the evolution of species.
Mutation -selection theory An evolution theory that states that mutations produce variations and that natural selection determines which variations will survive in order to produce biological evolution.
Evolutionary family tree A diagram demonstrating the supposed stages of biological evolution.
Homologous structures Similar structures found in different species that are attributed to common ancestry.
