TermDefinition
Rotation Rotation is the process or act of turning or circling around something. An example of rotation is the earth's orbit around the sun.
revolution Orbital motion about a point, especially as distinguished from axial rotation: the planetary revolution about the sun.
orbit the curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a star, planet, or moon, especially a periodic elliptical revolution.
Geocentric Theory A Geocentric theory is an astronomical theory which describes the universe as a Geocentric system, i.e., a system which puts the Earth in the center of the universe, and describes other objects from the point of view of the Earth
Heliocentric Theory The theory that the earth revolves around the sun is called the heliocentric theory, helio meaning 'sun' and centric meaning 'in the center.'
astronomy the science of observing the sky
solar system the collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets.
telescope a solar telescope is a special purpose telescope used to observe the Sun.
comet a celestial object consisting of a nucleus of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a “tail” of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun.
gravity The force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. For most purposes Newton's laws of gravity apply, with minor modifications to take the general theory of relativity into account.
astronomer an expert in or student of astronomy.
NASA The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the agency of the United States Federal Government responsible for the civilian space program as well as aeronautics and aerospace research.
axis an imaginary line about which a body rotates.
tilt move or cause to move into a sloping position on Earth
meteors a small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth's atmosphere, becoming incandescent as a result of friction and appearing as a streak of light.
constelations A constellation is a group of stars that, when seen from Earth, form a pattern.
vernal equinox the equinox in March.
autumnal equinox the equinox in autumn, on about September 22 in the northern hemisphere and March 20 in the southern hemisphere.
summer solstice the start of summer, on about June 21.
winter solsitice the start of winter, on about December 21.
