Meteology

TermDefinition
Atmospheric Pressure The pressure exerted by the weight of air in the atmosphere of Earth.
Barometer An instrument measuring atmospheric pressure, used especially in forecasting the weather and determining altitude.
Altitude the height of anything above a given planetary reference plane, especially above sea level on earth.
Greenhouse Effect is the process by which radiation from a planet's atmosphere warms the planet's surface to a temperature above what it would be without its atmosphere.
Anemometer any instrument for measuring the speed of wind.
Air Mass is a volume of air defined by its temperature and water vapor content.
Warm Front is defined as the transition zone where a warm air mass is replacing a cold air mass.
Cold Front is defined as the leading edge of a cooler mass of air, replacing at ground level a warmer mass of air, which lies within a fairly sharp surface trough of low pressure.
Stationary Front is a pair of air masses, neither of which is strong enough to replace the other.
Occluded Front is formed during the process of cyclogenesis when a cold front overtakes a warm front.
Weather Forecast is the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a given location.
Menteorologist an expert in or student of meteorology; a weather forecaster.
Cumulus a cloud forming rounded masses heaped on each other above a flat base at fairly low altitude.
Cirrus cloud forming wispy filamentous tufted streaks (“mare's tails”) at high altitude, usually 16,500–45,000 feet (5–13 km).
Stratus cloud forming a continuous horizontal gray sheet, often with rain or snow.
Global of or relating to the whole world; worldwide.
Coriolis Efect an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation.
Local belonging or relating to a particular area or neighborhood, typically exclusively so.
Land Breeze a breeze blowing toward the sea from the land, especially at night, owing to the relative warmth of the sea.
Sea Breeze a breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day owing to the relative warmth of the land.
Thunderstorm a storm with thunder and lightning and typically also heavy rain or hail.
Hurricane a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean.
Tornado a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system.
Water Spout a rotating column of water and spray formed by a whirlwind occurring over the sea or other body of water.
Lighting the occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder.
Blizzard a severe snowstorm with high winds and low visibility.
Flood an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land.
