Where are the prevailing westerlies? West to East
What direction do the winds blow in the Northern Hemisphere? Southeast
What direction do the winds blow in the Southern Hemisphere? Northwest
Why are the prevailing westerlies important? They are winds that cause the Gulf Stream to carry warm water from the Equator to Western Europe
What is a jet stream? Bands of high speed winds
What direction do the jet stream winds blow and at what speed? West to East, 200-400 km per hour
How can people use the jet streams? It saves time and fuel
Why would a pilot not want to fly with the jet stream if they are headed West? It will slow them down tremendously
What force is pulling air down? Gravity
Can the weight of air change? Yes, it gains weight when its cold and loses weight when its warm
In which type of temperature do molecules move faster? Hot
What direction does cold air travel? Down
Does temperature affect air pressure? Yes, hot air rises and cold air comes down to take its place
