Atmospheric Pressure(air pressure) The force per unit area that is exerted on a surface by the weight of the atmosphere.
Barometer An instrument that measures atmospheric pressure.
Altitude The height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
Greenhouse Effect The process by which gases are trapped and hold heat in the atmosphere like a blanket wrapped around Earth.
Anemometer An instrument used to measure wind speed.
Air Mass A large body of air through out which temperature and moisture content are similar.
Continental Polar A cold air mass that forms over land and that has low humidity.
Continental Tropical A warm air mass that forms over land and that has low humidity.
Maritime Polar A cold air mass that has high humidity as a result of passing over warmer water.
Maritime Tropical A warm and humid air mass that typically forms over tropical oceans.
Continental Arctic Brings extremely cold temperatures with very little moisture, originate north of the arctic circle in winter.
Warm Front The front edge of an advancing warm air mass that replaces colder air with warmer air.
Cold Front The front edge of a moving mass of cold air that pushes beneath a warmer air mass like a wedge.
Stationary Front A front air masses that moves either very slowly or not at all.
Occluded Front A front that forms when a cold air mass overtakes a warm air mass and lifts the warm air mass off the ground and over another air mass.
Weather Forecast A forecast characterizing the state of the atmosphere at a given time.
Meteorologist Meteorologists are scientists who study the atmosphere. They examine its effects on the environment, predict the weather, or investigate climate trends.
Cumulus Cloud A low-level, billowy cloud that commonly has top that resembles cotton balls and a dark bottom.
Cirrus Cloud A feathery cloud that is composed of ice crystals and that has the highest altitude of any cloud in the sky.
Stratus Cloud A gray cloud that has a flat, uniform base and that commonly forms at very low altitudes.
Global Winds Winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances.
Coriolis Effect The curving of the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to the Earth's rotation.
Local Winds Winds that blow over short distances.
Land Breeze Flow or air from land to a body of water.
Sea Breeze Winds that blow from an ocean or lake onto land.
Thunderstorm A usually brief, heavy storm that consists of rain, strong winds, lightning, and thunder.
Hurricane a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean.
Tornado A destructive, rotating column of air that has very high wind speeds and that may be visible as a funnel-shaped cloud.
Water Spout A tornado that occurs over a water surface.
Lightning the occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder.
Blizzard a severe snowstorm with high winds and low visibility.
Flood an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land.
