Meteorology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atmospheric pressure (air pressure) | the force exerted onto a surface by the weight of the air |
| Barometer | an instrument measuring air pressure |
| Altitude | the height of an object or point in relation to sea level |
| Greenhouse Effect | the trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere because of the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the Earth's surface. |
| Anemometer | an instrument for measuring the speed of the wind |
| Air Mass | a body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure. |
| cP-Continental Polar | Air Masses cold temperatures and little moisture |
| cT-Continental Tropical | tropical continental is a dry air mass formed over land in area close to the equator |
| mP-Maritime Tropical | air masses originate over the warm waters of the tropics and Gulf of Mexico, where heat and moisture are transferred to the overlying air from the waters below |
| cA-Continental Arctic | air masses are characterized by dry air near the surface while maritime air masses are moist |
| Warm Front | A warm front is defined as the transition zone where a warm air mass is replacing a cold air mass |
| Cold Front | the boundary of an advancing mass of cold air, in particular the trailing edge of the warm sector of a low-pressure system. |
| Stationary Front | A stationary front is a pair of air masses, neither of which is strong enough to replace the other |
| Occluded Front | a composite front produced by occlusion |
| Weather Forecast | the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a given location |
| Meteorologist | an expert in or student of meteorology; a weather forecaster |
| Cumulus | Cumulo- means "heap" or "pile" in Latin. Cumulus clouds are often described as "puffy", "cotton-like" or "fluffy" in appearance, and have flat bases. |
| Cirrus | cloud forming wispy filamentous tufted streaks (“mare's tails”) at high altitude |
| Startus | low-level cloud characterized by horizontal layering |
| Global | These Global Winds are the dominant prevailing wind patterns that blow in a fairly constant, steady direction across our earth |
| Coriolis Effect | an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation |
| Local | Local winds are small scale convective winds of local origin caused by temperature differences |
| Land Breeze | a breeze blowing toward the sea from the land, especially at night |
| Sea Breeze | a breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day |
| Thunderstorm | a storm with thunder and lightning and typically also heavy rain or hail |
| Hurricane | a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean |
| Tornado | a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system |
| Water Spout | a rotating column of water and spray formed by a whirlwind occurring over the sea or other body of water. |
| Lightning | the occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder. |
| Blizzard | a severe snowstorm with high winds and low visibility |
| Flood | an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land. |
