adaptation an inherited trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment.
artificial selection the practice by which humans select plants or animals for breeding based on desired traits.
common ancestor the most recent species from which two different species have evolved.
embryology the study of development.
evolution the process by which populations change over time.
extinction occurs when all members of a species dies.
fossil record all of the fossils that have been discovered which provides evidence about the order in which species have existed through time.
fossils the remains or imprints of once-living organisms.
mutation a change in genetic material.
natural selection the process by which organisms that inherit advantageous traits tend to reproduce more successfully than other organisms do.
population all of he individuals of a species that live in an area at the same time.
species a group of closely related organisms that can mate to produce fertile offspring.
variations naturally occurring differences within traits.
