waves and power

QuestionAnswer
what is the definition of work? the use of force to move an object some distance.
what is the definition of force? a push or pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of an object.
what is a wave? energy being transferred by vibrations.
what is the definition of a medium? the material through which a wave can travel.
what is the definition of a crest? the points where the wave is highest.
what is the definition of a trough? the points where the wave is the lowest.
what is the definition of longitudinal wave? when particles move back and fourth in the same direction that the wave travels.
what is the definition of a compression? when the wave gets closer together.
what is the definition of a rarefaction? when the wave spreads apart.
what is the definition of a transverse wave? when particles move perpendicularly to the direction the wave travels.
what is the definition of mechanical waves? waves that require a medium.
what is the definition of electromagnetic waves? waves that don't require a medium.
what is the definition of amplitude? how far particles in the medium move from their resting position.
what is the definition of wavelength? any point on the wave to an identical point on the wave.
what is the definition of frequency? the number of waves that pass a point in a certain amount of time.
what is the definition of a hertz? hertz is unit used to measure frequency.
what is the definition of wave speed? the speed that waves travel.
what is the definition of power? work divided by time.
a bulldozer can can apply 7000 newtons to move a house 40 meters. how much work did the bulldozer accomplish? 280,000 because work equals force times distance so 7,000 newtons x 40 meters equals 280,000 joules of work.
a man did 900 joules of work in 90 seconds. how much power did he use? 100 watts of power because power equals work divided by time and 900 divided by 9 equals 100.
a wavelength is 18 miles from crest to crest and it took 2 seconds. what is the wave speed? 9 mph because wave speed equals wavelength divided by wave period so 18 divided by 2 equals 9.
if a wave is going 20 hertz how many wavelengths is that per second? 20 because 1 hertz equals one wavelength per second.
what kind of wave has rarefaction's and compression's? longitudinal wave.
if a wave had to identical crest very far apart would it have a high or low amplitude? low amplitude.
name two waves that don't require a medium. UV rays, light rays, radio waves.
If a lot of waves pass in a second does it have a high or low frequency? high.
