Plate Tectonics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Asthenosphere | below lithosphere, |
| Continental Drift | lateral movement of continents |
| lithosphere | solid portion of earth; crust |
| pangaea | hypothetical land mass that existed when all continents were joined |
| plate | crustal plate |
| plate tectonics | lithosphere divided into a number of crustal plates, each move |
| seafloor spreading | new ocean floor is created as molten rises in between plate margins |
| abyssal plains | is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor |
| trench | long, narrow excavation in ground |
| subduction zone | collision of crustal plates results in one plate being overriden by the other |
| convection | transfer of heat by circulation |
| earthquake | series of vibrations induced in earth's crust |
| epicenter | point directly above the true center of disturbance, where shock waves of an earthquake come from |
| fault | break in continuity of a body of rock |
| focus | point of origin of an earthquake |
| magnitude | size |
| normal fault | gravity fault; fault along inclined plane where upper side has moved downward |
| reverse fault | rock above fault plane is displaced upward relative to rock below |
| p-wave | earthquake wave that travels through the interior of earth, first to be recorded |
| s-wave | transverse earthquake wave that travels through the interior of earth, second to be recorded |
| seismograph | instruments used to measure and record vibrations from earthquake |
| strike-slip fault | fault where movement is along strike of fault |
| tsunami | large sea wave produced by a seaquake or underwater volcanic eruption |
| batholith | large body of intrusive rock that crystallized below earth's surface |
| caldera | basinlike depression from explosion or collapse of center of volcano |
| cinder cone volcano | A steep, conical hill consisting of glassy volcanic fragments that accumulate around and downwind from a volcanic vent |
| dike | narrow cross-cutting mass of igneous rock intruded into a fissure in older rock. |
| hot spot | a region of molten rock below and within the lithosphere that persists long enough to leave a record of uplift and volcanic activity at the earth's surface. |
| shield volcano | a broad volcano built up from the repeated nonexplosive eruption of basalt to form a low dome or shield, usually having a large caldera at the summit |
| sill | a tabular body of intrusive igneous rock, ordinarily between beds of sedimentary rocks or layers of volcanic ejecta |
| volcano | a vent in the earth's crust through which lava, steam, ashes, etc., are expelled, either continuously or at irregular intervals |
| anticline | an anticlinal rock structure. |
| syncline | are folds in which each half of the fold dips toward the trough of the fold |
| tension | the state of being stretched tight. |
| shear | the tendency of forces to deform or fracture a member or a rock in a direction parallel to the force, as by sliding one section against another. |
| uplift | to lift up |
| fissure | a narrow opening produced by cleavage or separation of parts |
| pyroclastic flow | is a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock |
| geyser | a hot spring that intermittently sends up fountainlike jets of water and steam into the air |
