weathering and erosion

| chemical weathering | decomposition of rock caused by chemical reactions resulting in formation of new compounds |
| mechanical weathering | physical breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces |
| erosion | process by which natural forces move weathered rock and soil from one place to another |
| deposition | occurs when agents of erosion lay down sediment |
| agents of erosion | water, wind, waves, gravity, glaciers |
| Igneous | rock formed by cooled lava or magma |
| intrusive | cooling takes place slowly beneath earth's surface |
| extrusive | cooling takes place quickly above earth's surface |
| metamorphic | forms when other rocks are changed by heat and pressure |
| sedimentary | rock formed from the compaction of rock pieces, mineral grains, or shell fragments |
| rock cycle | the process where rocks change from one type to another |
| crystallization | how minerals form |
| streak | powder color left behind when a mineral is scratched on a porcelain plate |
| hardness | ability for a mineral to resist scratching |
| mohs scale | scale used to determine hardness |
| luster | mineral's ability to reflect light |
| ores | minerals mined because they contain something of value |
| fossil fuels | natural fuels formed from the remains of living things. They are nonrenewable |
