Whit Plate Tectonics
plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| mantle | thickest layer of earth made of iron and magnesium |
| oceanic crust | more dense layer of crust that sinks during subduction |
| pangaea | super continent |
| transform boundary | boundary where two plates slide past |
| convection currents | 'bubbling' in the mantle, responsible for making plates move |
| divergent boundary | two plates move away from each other |
| convergent boundary | two plates collide |
| mountains | created when two continental plates collide |
| mid-ocean ridge | created at a divergent boundary and creates new crust |
| subduction | one plate slides under another and crust is destroyed |
| epicenter | point on earth's surface where the earthquake is strongest |
| focus | point inside earth where earthquake begins |
| magnitude | strength of an earthquake |
| seismic waves | earthquake waves that travel outward in all directions |
| fault | crack in earth's crust |
| earthquakes | what happens a lot at transform boundaries |
| alfred wegner | who came up with the theory of continental drift? |
| ring of fire | area of high volcanic and seismic activity in the pacific |
| hotspot | hot area of the mantle that rises up and creates volcanoes and islands |
| lava | what magma is called once it reaches earth's surface |
