QuestionAnswer
Troposphere is the Lowest level of atmosphere, gets cold
Stratosphere 2nd layer of atmosphere, Seprated by Tropopause, lot of O3. Gets warm as relate to Troposphere
Mesosphere seperated by Stratopause, 3rd layer atmosphere, prevents UV rays, Gets cold,
Thermosphere(ionosphere) Northern lights, Gets warm
Earth Major Climate zones, Are formed by the unequal heating of the atmosphere, the land and sea (along with the rotation of the earth).
Climate` The average of Temperature, rain fall, light, wind speed.
Weather The day to day variations in climate factors.
Seasons Long term predictable variations in weather factors. Only true outside of tropics. Caused by chnging and of in coming Radiation.
Tilt of the Earth 23 degrees
Atmospere Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermospere
What causes climate diffs and weather 1. Unequeal heating of the earth. 2. Everyplace on earth gets the same number of hours of sunlight, but the Equater gets more energy
Two Key concepts 1. Warm air(water) rises, cool air(water)sinks. 2. These lead to patterns of general global air currents.
Hadley Cells Atmospere air currents around the equator
Modifiers of General patterns 1. Wind Direction, 2. Mountains. 3. Variations in altitude. 4. Microclimates.
Wind Directions Are prevailing winds blowing over land. -Moving high and low pressure areas -Changes with time of day (land vs. sea breezes
Mountains Interaction with wind -> rainshadow deserts
Variations with altitude Parallel thoseseen with latitude
Microclimates Climograph
Biomes Found in characteristic locations on eart based upon rain fall and temperature characteristics.
Aquatic Biomes Occupy the majority of earth's surface, Vertical stratification: (photo zone vb aphotic zone
Freshwater biomes Lakes - zonation in a lake - temperature lake cycle. Bogs, Streams, rivers
Open Ocean Only productive in areas of upwelling.
Coastal Generally very productive. Nutrient rich extends to edge of continetal shelf
Coral reefs very diverse, very threatened
Estuaries Mix of fresh and salt water - extremely variable conditions. - vey productive - largely endangered
Barrier beaches and isands Horizontal vs verticlal zonation, Ecotone, Very variable dependending on global location.
Wetlands/mangrove swamps very productive.
Wetlands/mangrove swamps flood protection
Wetlands/mangrove swamps Recharge ground water
Wetlands/mangrove swamps Filter polutants
Wetlands/mangrove swamps Major role in cycles of N.C. and South
Terrestrial biomes Location determine primarily by climate
Terrestrial biomes Composition usually patchy because of constant disturbances
Terrestrial biomes Globalzonation is echoed as you move up a mountain
Tundra Bitter cold (avg - 5C)
Tundra limited sunlight
Tundra Permafrost
Tundra no permafrost in alpine tundra
Taiga (boreal coniferous forest Ground thaws completely
Taiga (boreal coniferous forest More ppt that tundra, mostly snow
Taiga (boreal coniferous forest largest vegetation formation on earth
Taiga (boreal coniferous forest Grow slwly, recover slowly
Temperate Forest Seasonal - below freezing to ca. 30C or so.
Temperate Forest 30 - 80" ppt annually
Temperate Forest Deep rich organic soil
Temperate Forest all but about 0.1 % of original extent have been cleared at some time.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
