Origin of Zoology

QuestionAnswer
Who were the first people to study animals and their behavior? People who wanted to eat them studied them so they were better able to hunt and track them.
Who is considered the "father" of Biology? Aristotle, who developed the first crude taxonomic system. 3000 AD
Who are Hooke and Leeuwenhoek? Hook created the first microscope, he was the first to name cells. Leewenhoek created a cruder microscope, and used it to look into pond water.
What did Leewenhoek see in the pond water? Tiny things he called "Animacules" which we now know are rotifers.
What did Linneas do? Created the taxonomic system of classification.
What did Lamarck do? He fathered invertebrate paleontology, and thought up the theory of "Inheritance of Acquired Traits"
What did Cuvier do? He fathered vertebrate paleontology.
What did Agassiz do? Wrote "Nomenclato Zoologicus" one of the world's first zoology encyclopedias. Proposed the Ice Ages.
What did Darwin do? Darwin changed the world of science forever with his book "The Origin of Species". He spent 22 years studying and analyzing before ever publishing.
What are the 9 disciplines within Zoology? Paleontology, Protozoology, Invertebrate Zoology, Entomology, Ichthyology, Herpetology, Orinthology, Mammology, Ethology
What would a paleontologist study? Prehistoric organisms
What is Herpetology? The study of Amphibians and Reptiles
What is Ichthyology? The study of Fish
What is Ethology? The study of Animal Behavior
What are the 10 approaches to Zoology? Taxonomic, Genetic, Anatomical, Physiological, Evolutionary, Embryological, Behavior, Ecological, Husbandry, Medical
