Antimicrobials

QuestionAnswer
Paul Ehrlich Proposed treating infectious diease with chemicals in the late 1800 early 1900's
Chemotherapy Therapy with chemicals (Animicrobial Therapy)
Selective Toxicity Toxic to infectious agents but not to the host.
Extract of Willow Bark (Aspirin) relieved pain
Cinchona tree bark used to treat malaria
Mercury Baths Used to treat syphilis
Salvarsan The 606th chemical tested by Paul Ehrlich for antimicrobial activity, it was effective in treating syphilis. Discovered in 1905
Alexander Fleming Discovered that the fungus Penicillium species produced an antibacterial substance. (1929)
Antibiotic A substance produced by a microorganism that is toxic to other microorganisms in low concentrations.
Gerhard Domagk Discovered a red dye that cured diseases called prontosil. This was teh first Sulfa drug.
Narrow Spectrum Antimicrobial active against few microorganisms. (gram+ or gram-)
Broad Spectrum Antimicrobial These are active against many different microorganisms (Work on both gram - and gram + bacteria)
Bacteriostatic a mode of action that an antimicrobial posses which inhibits the growth of infectious agents but do not kill them
bactericidial a mode of action which a microorganism posses that kills infectious agents
What are the steps for evaluating new antimicrobials? 1.It's chemical structure must be ascertained2.Is it safe and effective?3.What is its antimicrobial action?4.what is the reason for it's selective toxicity?5.Against which germ is it effective?6.What is the correct dosage and duration of treatme
Synthetics chemicals developed and manufatured by chemists
Sulfa Drugs (Sulfonamindes) Derived from prontosil (red dye) Was found to cure bacterial infection.
sulfanilamide the active component in sulfonamides
Action and Selective Toxicity of Sulfonamides 1.Bacterial cells use para amino benzoic acid to make vitamins and folic acid which are necessary for cell growth.2.Sulfanilamide inhibits folic acid synthesis and inhibits growth.3.Sulfanilamide is bacteriostatic, 4.Shows NO effect in human cells a
