Weather Week 4

TermDefinition
High Pressure a mass of cool, dry air in the atmosphere; they bring fair weather and light winds
Low Pressure a mass of warm, moist air in the atmosphere; they bring violent storms with high winds
Cold Front a boundary between a cold and warm air mass; cold air moves to replace warm air into the atmosphere
Warm Front a line between a warm air mass and a cool air mass; warm air moves to replace cold air in the atmosphere; they create high humidity
Occluded Front happens when a cold air mass pushes through a warm air mass up towards the atmtosphere; they bring cloud and rain
Stationary Front appears when a cold air mass and a warm air mass meet and neither mass is strong enough to move the other; they can remain over an area for days
Sea Breeze during the day, the air over land heats quickly, while the water stays cooler, as the air above the land heats, it begins to rise. The cool air from the water moves toward the land to replace the rising warm air
Land Breeze at night, this occurs near the ocean. The air above the land cools down fast and air above water stays warm. The air above the ocean rises and pulls the cool air from the land
Valley Breeze during the day, the sun heats the valley air quickly. The warm air rises and moves above the mountain
Mountain Breeze at night, the mountain air cools faster than the valley. The cool air sinks down the mountain causing the wind to move in the opposite direction
