Chapter 1 Notes

TermDefinition
Barline vertical line that groups notes and rests together
Clef symbol at the beginning of a staff that indicates which lines and spaces represent which notes
Rhythm combination of long and short notes and rests
Key Signature a set of sharps of flats that indicate where "Do" is located
Meter Meter way of organizing rhythm
Scale group of pitches which are sung or played in succession and are based on a particular home tone (tonic)
Beat steady pulse of all music
Grand staff a staff that is created when two staves are joined together
Double barline indicates the end of a song or a section of a song
Key determined by its home tone or tonic
Bass clef a clef that generally indicates notes that sound lower than middle C
Leap moving on the scale from one note to another while skipping more than one note
Whole note a note that represents 4 beats of sound
Half rest rest that represents two beats of silence
Line note a note with a line through the center of the note
Measure the space between the barlines
Step moving on the scale from one note to another without skips any notes
Eighth rest note that represents ½ a beat of silence
Space note a note in between the lines on the staff
Staff five lines and four spaces on which notes are written
Treble clef clef that generally indicates notes that sound higher than middle C
Whole rest a rest that represents 4 beats of silence
Eighth note note that represent ½ a beat of sound
Quarter note one beat of sound
Quarter rest one beat of silence
Half note note that represents two beats of sound
Skip moving on the scale form one note to another while only skipping one note
Time signature set of numbers at the beginning of a piece of music
