EARTH'S LAYERS
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Crust | outermost surface of Earth; oceanic crust is the floor beneath the oceans and is thinner, has higher density than continental crust. Continental crust is much thicker than oceanic crust. |
| Mantle | almost 3,000 km thick, the mantle is made up of hot, dense rock. As one moves deeper, the temperature and pressure rise. |
| Outer Core | molten nickel and iron |
| Inner Core | solid, mainly iron |
| Hydrosphere | all water on Earth’s surface; oceans make up of 70% of surface. |
| Tides | cyclical rise and fall of the oceans; caused by gravitational pull of the moon. |
| Water Cycle | water circulates through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and run-off. |
| Atmosphere | envelope of gases around Earth. It is mainly made up of nitrogen (70%) and oxygen (20%); absorb solar radiation, moderate temperatures and distribute water. |
| Weather patterns | Unequal heating of the atmosphere and Earth’s spin (coriolis effect) create wind patterns. Surface features like mountains also affect weather. Atmosphere heated from surface of earth upward. |
