Chapter 1: The Water Planet

TermDefinition
The 5 ways in which people use water. Household purposes, water for agriculture, industry, transportation, and recreation.
Irrigation The process of supplying water to areas of land to make them suitable for growing crops.
Why is water essential? It is essential for living things to grow, reproduce, and carry out other important processes.
Photosynthesis Plants using water, plus carbon dioxide and energy from the sun to produce food.
97% The percentage of Earth's water that is salt water.
3% The percent of the Earth's freshwater
Lakes, rivers, shallow groundwater. Earth's freshwater sources
Groundwater Water that fills cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers.
Polar Molecule A molecule that has a electrically charged areas.
Surface Tension The tightness across the surface of water caused by polar molecules pulling on each other.
Capillary Action The combined force of attraction among water molecules with the molecules of surrounding materials.
Solution A mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another.
Solvent The substance that does the dissolving of a substance.
Water dissolves so many substances that is is called what?? The universal solvent
What are the 3 different states of water? Solid, liquid, and gas
Evaporation The process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb energy to change to a gas.
Condensation The process by which a gas changes to a liquid
Specific Heat The amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of a certain mass by 1 degree C.
Water Cycle The continuous process by which water moves through the living and non-living parts of the environment.
Transpiration Water vapor given off through the leaves of plants.
Precipitation Water that falls to Earth as rain, snow, hail, or sleet.
