Earth's Rocks

QuestionAnswer
What is the uppermost layer of soil, which is more crumbly than other soil layers? topsoil
What rock that forms when many smaller bits of rock bind together? sedimentary rock
What is a natural, solid substance with a definite chemical composition and physical structure? mineral
What is a rock that has been changed by pressure, heat, or very hot water? metamorphic rock
What is melted rock within Earth? magma
What is melted rock that has risen to Earth's surface? lave
What is rock that forms when melted rock hardens? igneous rock
What is the bottom soil horizon, mainly composed of rock? bedrock
How is a rock different from a mineral? a rock is made up of one or more minerals
Which of these is most useful in identifying a mineral? Color Hardness Luster Size hardness
A farm field has a row of tall trees bordering its eastern edge. What is the most likely reason the farmer planted these trees? to prevent soil blowing off the field
What causes both igneous and metamorphic rock to form where a land plate meets an ocean plate? the heat and pressure caused by the collision of the plates
Mineral-rich water drips off a cave ceiling, leaving a puddle. After the water evaporates, calcite and other minerals remain. Over time, the rock travertine forms. What kind of rock is travertine? chemical sedimentary
You have a mineral that easily cleaves into layers. Which mineral is it likely you have? mica
You want to model how sedimentary rock forms. Which of these actions better models the process: 1. shifting flour, baking soda, salt, and powered milk together to make a pancake mix. OR 2. combining crushed graham cracker crumbs with melted butter and pressing the mixture into pie pan. Explain why. making graham cracker crust is a better model because graham crackers are mixed with butter and pressed into the pan, sediment may be mixed with binding chemicals and subjected to pressure to form rock.
What are two reasons that help explain why you are more likely to find fossils in sedimentary rock than in igneous or metamorphic rock? fossils form when organisms are buried in sediments, which over time, form sedimentary rock. The pressure and heat required to form igneous and metamorphic rock can destroy fossils that have formed in them.
Grikes are vertical cracks in bed of limestone. Grikes can be as deep as 9 feet. They from by erosion. Do you think grikes from mainly by the action of wind or by the action of water. Explain your answer. grikes form mainly the action of water, which washes down through cracks in the limestone. The flat surface of the limestone bed would make wind a less likely agent of erosion
Grikes are vertical cracks in a bed of limestone. Grikes can be as deep as 9 feet. They form by erosion. How could you explain the regular pattern the grikes make? the structure of the limestone may allow it to crack or fracture at regular intervals. Water then erodes the rock on both sides of the cracks. forming the grikes.
