There are two types of bodies of water: freshwater and saltwater
Oceanography is the study of the ocean water, plants, and animals
Salinity is the amount of salt in water.
Oceans nearer the equator have more salt content than oceans nearer the poles.
Where does the salt in the ocean come from? The salt comes from the land.
What is the process of removing salt from saltwater called? desalination
What is Ichthyology? The study of fish.
True or False: All landforms on dry land are also found on ocean floors. true
True or False: The deepest place in the Pacific Ocean is the Mariana Trench. true
Where is the continental shelf located? the continental shelf is just off the shore.
What does potable mean? drinkable
There are three Ocean Surface Zones, what are they? Intertidal, Near-Shore, and Open Ocean
The Intertidal Zone narrow strip of land along the shore, covered with water at high tide and left uncovered at low tide.
The Near Shore Zone on the Continent shelf, great biodiversity, extends from shore to many miles from shore.
The Open Ocean Zone very deep, sunlight can only reach through the upper depths of this zone.
The Sun Lit Zone sunlight shines throughout and gives water warmer temperature
The Twilight Zone water here is cooler and appears darker.
The Midnight Zone no light reaches here and it is completely dark and very cold.

What is chemosynthesis? Chemosynthesis is the process of deep ocean microbes making food using chemicals.
