Simple Machines

QuestionAnswer
What are the six types of simple machines? Simple lever, pulley, wheel and axle, simple inclined plane, wedge, screw
What are the two major categories (families)? Lever family and Inclined Plane family
What is in the lever family? Simple lever, pulley, and wheel and axle
What is in the inclined plane family? Simple inclined plane, wedge, and screw
What is a lever made up of? A rigid arm that turns around a fulcrum
With a lever, the input force is ___ or redirected into an ____ ____ multiplied; output force
What are the three classes of levers? First, second, and third
What is a first class lever? A lever that has a fulcrum between the points of application of the input and output forces
What is the ma if the fulcrum is closer to the input force? (First class lever) More than 1
A ___ for a larger distance (first class lever) lot of force
What is the ma if the fulcrum is closer to the output force? (First class lever) Less than 1
What is a second class lever? A lever that has a fulcrum that's at one end of the arm and the input force is applied to the other end
Always ____ the force (second class lever) multiplies
What is the ma? (second class lever) Less than 1
What does a third class lever do? Multiplies distance rather than force
What is the ma? (third class lever) More than 1
Takes a larger ___ to get a lot of ___ force; distance
A first class lever can either multiply ___ or increase ___ force; distance
A second class lever will always multiply ___ Force
A third class lever will always increase ___ Distance
What are pulleys? Modified levers
What is the ma of a fixed pulley? 1
What does a pulley do to the force? Changes the direction
What can multiple or moving pulleys do to the ma? Increase it
What is a wheel and axle? A lever connected to a shaft
What happens when a small input force is applied to the steering wheel? (wheel and axle) The force is multiplied to become a large output force applied to the steering column
What is a ramp? An example of an inclined plane
When you push an object up an inclined plane, what does it require? Less input force than lifting the object
What is the ma equal to with an inclined plane? Length/height the object is lifted
What is a wedge? A modified inclined plane
What is a wedge formed from? Two inclined planes placed back to back
What does a wedge turn a single downward force into? Two forces directed out to the sides
What is a screw? An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder
What does a screw with steeper sides require? More force over less distance
What is a compound machine? A machine that combines two or more simple machines

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
