| natural disaster | a particular event in which 10 or more people are killed; 100 or more people are affected; a declaration of emergency is issued, or there is a request for international assistance |
| subsidence | sinking |
| magnitude | intensity of a natural hazard in terms of the amount of energy released |
| frequency | recurrence interval of a disastrous event |
| catastrophe | disastrous situations requiring a long process to recovery from grave damages |
| risk analysis | calculating risk to society; critical to understanding impacts |
| forecast | certainty of event is given as the % chance of the event happening (80% chance of rain) |
| warning | to alert public of a prediction or forecast which is hazardous |
