natural disaster a particular event in which 10 or more people are killed; 100 or more people are affected; a declaration of emergency is issued, or there is a request for international assistance
subsidence sinking
magnitude intensity of a natural hazard in terms of the amount of energy released
frequency recurrence interval of a disastrous event
catastrophe disastrous situations requiring a long process to recovery from grave damages
risk analysis calculating risk to society; critical to understanding impacts
forecast certainty of event is given as the % chance of the event happening (80% chance of rain)
warning to alert public of a prediction or forecast which is hazardous
