QuestionAnswer
Three main ideas geologist use to study Earth's history 1. rock record provides evidence of geiological events and life forms fo the past.2. processe4s observed on Earth in the present also acted in the past.3. Earth is very old and has chged over geologic time.
What is uniformitarianism? Physical, chemical, and biological laws that operate today have also operated in the geologic past.
What is relative dating? Method geologists use to put rock in chronological order.
Three principles of relative dating? Law of superposition, principle of original horizontality, principle of cross-cutting relationships.
Law of Superposition? underformed sequence of sedimentary rocks, each layer is older than the one above it and younger than the one below it.
Principle of original horizontality? layers of sediment are generally deposited in a horizontal position.
Principle of cross-cutting relationships? when a fault cuts through rock layers, or when magma intrudes other rocks and hardens, then the fault or intrusion is younger than the rocks around it.
Methods geologists use to interpret the rock record? Inclusions and unconformities.
Inclusions Pieces of one rock unit that are contained within another.
Unconformity Surface that represents a break in the rock record.
Correlation matching rocks of similiar age in different locations.
