| Ocean Currents | A movement of ocean water that flows a regular pattern | Moving water in the ocean. | |
| Surface Current | A horizontal movement of ocean water that is caused by wind and that occurs at or nears the oceans surface | SURFACE currents are on the SURFACE and WIND is on the SURFACE. | |
| Coriolis Effect | The curving of the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to the Earth's rotation. | A guy named CORIOLIS discovered the Earth's rotation effected the direction of currents. | |
| Deep Current | A stream-like movement of ocean water far below the surface. | DEEP currents are DEEP and deeper is colder | |
| Upwelling | The movement of deep, cold, and nutrient-rich water to the surface. | UPwelling comes UP and you can only come up if you were originally down. | |
| El Nino | A periodic occurrence in the eastern Pacific Ocean in which the surface-water temperature becomes unusually warm. | E is the 5th letter in the alphabet and El Nino lasts 5 years | |
| La Nina | A periodic occurrence in the eastern Pacific Ocean in which the surface-water temperature becomes unusually cool. | Sounds like El-Nino but isn't so its the opposite. | |
| Climate | The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time. | Weather is shorter and climate is longer. | |
| Wave | A periodic disturbance in a solid, liquid, or gas as energy is transmitted. | People surf on these(Waves). | |
| Crest | The highest part of a wave. | Crest is like a crown and a crown is ON TOP of your head | |
| Trough | The Lowest part of a wave. | Crest is at the top so trunk is at the bottom. Also, trough is below crest in the vocab packet. :) | |
| Wavelength | The distance from any point on a wave to an identical point on the next wave. | Length is long and long is horizontal and horizontal is wave length | |
| Wave Height | The time required for identical points on consecutive waves to pass a given point. | Height is how tall you are, wave height is how tall the wave is. | |
| Wave Frequency | The number of waves that pass a point in a given amount of time. | Frequency is how many so the frequency of waves is how many waves pass a point. | |
| Longshore current/drift | Waves that come in diagonally and deposit sand as they are returning to the ocean. | it comes on the shore the long way (diagonally) and leaves normally (strait down). | |
| Tides | The daily rise and fall of Earth's waters on shores. | Like the waves. | |
| High Tide | When the water reaches its highest point. | The tide is at its highest point. | |
| Low Tide | When the water reaches its lowest point. | The tide is at its lowest point. | |
| Spring Tide | The greatest range between high and low tide. | Spring has more letters than neap so spring tide has a greater difference. | |
| Neap Tide | A tide with the least difference between low and high tide. | Neap has less letters than spring so it is the tide with the least difference. | |
| Tidal Range | The distance between high tide sea level and low tide sea level. | Range is distance between and tidal is the tides so tidal range is the distance between the tides. | |
| Breakers | A heightened water wave that breaks into foam near the shore or against a rock or other object. | Breakers are waves that BREAK. | |
| Breaker Zone | The area of water where breakers form. | The zone where breakers are | |
| Surf | The area between the breaker zone and the shore. | The area where where surfers surf | |
| Undertow | A subsurface current that is near shore and that pulls objects out to sea. | It goes under the waves and tows things back to sea. | |
| Whitecaps | The bubbles in the crest of a breaking wave. | Bubbles can be white so these are WHITEcaps. | |
| Swells | One of a group of long ocean waves that have steadily traveled a great distance from their point of generation. | Waves that are very swell to ride on. | |
