Heart

What is the mediastium? The medial cavity of the thorax.
What is the pericardium? The double-walled sac that encloses the heart.
What is the fibrous pericardium? The loosely fitting superficial part of the pericardium.
What is the order of the layers of the heart from exterior to interior? 1)Fibrous pericardium 2)Parietal layer of serous pericardium 3)Pericardial cavity 4)Visceral layer of serous pericardium(epicardium) 5)Myocardium 6)Endocardium 7)Heart Chamber
What is the interatrial septum? The internal partition that divides the heart logitudinally at the atria.
What is the interventricular septum? The internal partition that divides the heart longitudinally at the ventricles.
What are auricles? Small, wrinkled, protruding appendages, which increase the atrial volume somewhat.
What are the three veins that carry blood into the heart and where are they bringing blood from? 1)Superior vena cava - returns blood from the body regions superior to the diaphragm 2)inferior vena cava - returns blood from the body areas below the diaphragm 3)coronary sinus - collects blood draining from the myocardium.
What are trabeculae carneae? "crossbars of flesh" Irregular ridges of muscle marking the internal walls of the ventricular chambers.
What is a papillary muscle? A cone-like muscle that plays a role in valve function, and project into the ventricular cavity.
What is the pulmonary circuit? The blood vessels that carry blood to and from the lungs.
What is the systemic circuit? The blood vessels that carry the functional blood supply to and from all body tissues.
What makes up the pulmaonary circuit pump? The right side of the heart.
What makes up the systemic circuit pump? The left side of the heart.
What is angina pectoris? Thoracic pain caused by a fleeting deficiency in blood delivery to the myocardium.
Which AV valve is the tricuspid valve? The right AV valve.
What are chordae tendineae? Tiny white collagen cords that are attached to each AV valve flap and anchor the cusps to the papillary muscles protruding from the ventricular walls.
What does functional syncytium refer to? The myocardium acting as a single coordinated unit because the cardiac cells in cardiac muscles are electrically coupled by gap junctions.
What is the sinoatrial node? Node just inside the right atrium that generates impulses. Known as the heart's pacemaker.
What is sinus rhythm? The characteristic rhythm of the sinoatrial node.
