| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the mediastium? | The medial cavity of the thorax. |
| What is the pericardium? | The double-walled sac that encloses the heart. |
| What is the fibrous pericardium? | The loosely fitting superficial part of the pericardium. |
| What is the order of the layers of the heart from exterior to interior? | 1)Fibrous pericardium 2)Parietal layer of serous pericardium 3)Pericardial cavity 4)Visceral layer of serous pericardium(epicardium) 5)Myocardium 6)Endocardium 7)Heart Chamber |
| What is the interatrial septum? | The internal partition that divides the heart logitudinally at the atria. |
| What is the interventricular septum? | The internal partition that divides the heart longitudinally at the ventricles. |
| What are auricles? | Small, wrinkled, protruding appendages, which increase the atrial volume somewhat. |
| What are the three veins that carry blood into the heart and where are they bringing blood from? | 1)Superior vena cava - returns blood from the body regions superior to the diaphragm 2)inferior vena cava - returns blood from the body areas below the diaphragm 3)coronary sinus - collects blood draining from the myocardium. |
| What are trabeculae carneae? | "crossbars of flesh" Irregular ridges of muscle marking the internal walls of the ventricular chambers. |
| What is a papillary muscle? | A cone-like muscle that plays a role in valve function, and project into the ventricular cavity. |
| What is the pulmonary circuit? | The blood vessels that carry blood to and from the lungs. |
| What is the systemic circuit? | The blood vessels that carry the functional blood supply to and from all body tissues. |
| What makes up the pulmaonary circuit pump? | The right side of the heart. |
| What makes up the systemic circuit pump? | The left side of the heart. |
| What is angina pectoris? | Thoracic pain caused by a fleeting deficiency in blood delivery to the myocardium. |
| Which AV valve is the tricuspid valve? | The right AV valve. |
| What are chordae tendineae? | Tiny white collagen cords that are attached to each AV valve flap and anchor the cusps to the papillary muscles protruding from the ventricular walls. |
| What does functional syncytium refer to? | The myocardium acting as a single coordinated unit because the cardiac cells in cardiac muscles are electrically coupled by gap junctions. |
| What is the sinoatrial node? | Node just inside the right atrium that generates impulses. Known as the heart's pacemaker. |
| What is sinus rhythm? | The characteristic rhythm of the sinoatrial node. |
