Volcanoes
Mrs.Howard's 7th Period 6th Grade Volcano Study-Stack
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Volcano | A weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface. |
| Magma | A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle. |
| Volcanic Ash | A dried powdery form of magma/lava. |
| Magma Chamber | A pocket of magma in the earth. |
| Crater | The cup-shaped depression or cavity on the surface of the earth or other heavenly body marking the orifice of a volcano. |
| Vent | An opening at the earth's surface from which volcanic material, as lava, steam, or gas, is emitted. |
| Pipe | The place where magma shoots out of in a volcano. |
| Lava Flow | The flow of lava. |
| Ring of Fire | A major volcanic belt formed by the many volcanoes that rim the Pacific Ocean. |
| Subduction | When lava moves from convection waves from the oceanic crust to the continental crust. |
| Element | A substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances. |
| Viscosity | The physical property of liquids or the resistance of a liquid to flowing. |
| Silica | A major ingredient in magma which is a compound made up of particles of the elements oxygen and silicon. |
| Pahoehoe | Fast moving, hot lava that has low viscosity. |
| AA | Cooler and slower moving lava with a high viscosity. |
| Compound | A substance made up of two or more elements that have been chemically combined. |
| Lava | Hot magma which has reached the Earth's surface. |
| Extinct | A volcano that is unlikely to erupt again. |
| Dormant | This type of volcano is not active now but it may show signs in the future. |
| Active | A volcano that is erupting or has shown signs of erupting in the future. |
| Cinder Cone Volcano | A steep cone-shape mountain or hill and small mountain. This type of volcano has high viscosity lava and produces ash, cinders, and bombs. |
| Composite/Strata Volcano | Tall cone shaped volcanoes of which layers of lava alternate with layers of lava and ash. |
| Shield Volcano | When lava flows gradually to build a wide, gently sloping mountain. This type of volcano rising on a hot spot built the Hawaiian Islands. |
| Caldera | A huge hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain. |
| Batholith | Large rock masses that form at the core of many mountain ranges. |
| Lava Plateau | When volcanoes instead of forming mountains they form high level areas made of lava |
| sill | When magma forces itself between layers of rock. |
| dike | When magma squeezes between horizontal layers of rock. |
| hotspring | A land mark that forms when groundwater is heated by a nearby body of magma or by hot rock deep underground. The hot water rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool. |
| geyser | Sometimes, rising hot water and steam become trapped underground in a narrow crack. |
