| magma | a molten mixture of rock forming substances |
| lava | what magma is when it reaches the surface |
| volcanic ash | ash that come from a volcano |
| crater | a circular depression in the ground caused by volcanic activity |
| lava flow | flowing lava |
| ring of rire | a major volcanic belt formed by the many volcanoes that rim the Pacific Ocean |
| vent | the weak point in the earth’s crust where hot magma is able to rise from the magma chamber and reach the surface |
| pipe | a pipe that goes through the earth that allows magma to erupt out of the volcano |
| element | a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances |
| viscosity | the resistance of a liquid to flowing |
| silica | a compound of something that's made out of silicon and oxygen |
| pahoehoe | slow moving, cool lava that has high viscosity |
| aa | fast moving, hot lava that has low viscosity |
| compound | a substance made out of two or more elements that have been chemically combined |
| subduction | when a plate goes downward into another plate |
| extinct | when a volcano is unlikely to erupt again |
| dormant | when a volcano is sleeping |
| active | when a volcano is erupting or showing signs of erupting |
| cinder cone volcano | a volcano that is formed by lava exploding in the air, making ash, cinders, and bombs, which pile up around the vent, forming a steep mountain |
| shield volcano | a volcano that is built by thin layers building up to make a wide, sloping mountain |
| composite volcano | a volcano that is built by alternating with ash, cinders, and bombs |
| coldera | a huge hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain |
| batholith | a large body of magma that cooled inside the crust |
| lava platue | thin, runny lava flow out of cracks and travel a long distance before cooling and hardening |
| sill | magma squeezes between layers of rock and hardens |
| dike | magma forces itself across rock and hardens |
| hot spring | water from the mantle that collects in a natural pool |
| geyser | a fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground |
