| gene | the section of chromosome that carries a code of particular trait. |
| alleles | alternate forms of trait. |
| genotype | the specific combination of dominant and recessive genes in an orgnism's DNA |
| phenotype | the expression of the genotype in an organism's appearance or body structure. |
| dominant trait | a trait masks the expression of another trait. |
| recessive trait | one that is seen only if both parents give the allele for the trait. |
| punnett square | a model used to predict the possible combination of inherited traits |
| inherited traits | traits that are expredded through genes and can be passed from parents to offspring. |
| acquired traits | characteristics that are gained from environmental influences, injuries, or practiced skills (learned) and are not inherited. |
| genetic engineering | manipulation of the genetic code of an organism to obtain a desired result. |
| trait | a characteristic |
| offspring | the young created when organisms reproduce. |
| gregor mendel | the father of genetics |
| heredity | the passing on of traits from one generation to the next. |
