greenhouse gases Any of the atmospheric gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation produced by solar warming of the Earth's surface
greenhouse effect the trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet's surface
pesticides a substance used for destroying insects or other organisms harmful to cultivated plants or to animals
fertlizer a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to increase its growth
overgrazing graze (grassland) so heavily that the vegetation is damaged and the ground becomes liable to erosion
terracing make or form (sloping land) into a number of level flat areas resembling a series of steps
windbreak is a plantation usually made up of one or more rows of trees or shrubs planted in such a manner as to provide shelter from the wind and to protect soil from erosion
