| runoff | the part of the water cycle that flows over land as surface water instead of being absorbed into groundwater or evaporating |
| wetlands | land consisting of marshes or swamps; saturated land |

| strip planting | the growing of different crops on alternate strips of ground that usually follow the contour of the land |
| no-till farming | is defined as farming where the soil is left relatively undisturbed from harvest to planting |
| crop rotation | the practice of growing different crops in succession on the same land chiefly to preserve the productive capacity of the soil |
| cover crop | a crop grown for the protection and enrichment of the soil |
| greenhouse gases | Any of the atmospheric gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation produced by solar warming of the Earth's surface |
| greenhouse effect | the trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet's surface |
| pesticides | a substance used for destroying insects or other organisms harmful to cultivated plants or to animals |
| fertlizer | a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to increase its growth |
| overgrazing | graze (grassland) so heavily that the vegetation is damaged and the ground becomes liable to erosion |
| terracing | make or form (sloping land) into a number of level flat areas resembling a series of steps |
| windbreak | is a plantation usually made up of one or more rows of trees or shrubs planted in such a manner as to provide shelter from the wind and to protect soil from erosion |
| mulching | a covering, as of straw, compost, or plastic sheeting, spread on the ground around plants to prevent excessive evaporation or erosion, enrich the soil, inhibit weed growth |
| acid rain | rainfall made sufficiently acidic by atmospheric pollution that it causes environmental harm, typically to forests and lakes. The main cause is the industrial burning of coal and other fossil fuels, the waste gases from which contain sulfur and nitrogen o |
