| Weight | The pull of gravity on an object. |
| Element | A pure substance made of only one kind of atom. |
| Compound | A pure substance made up of atoms of two or more elements. Examples are water and carbon dioxide. |
| Energy | Chemical bonds can store what? |
| Covalent Bonds | Formed when two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. |
| Polar Molecules | Molecules with an unequal distribution of electrical charge. |
| Nonpolar Molecules | Molecules with an equal distribution of electrical charge. |
| Ion | `An atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons. |
| Cohesion | An attraction between substances of the same kind. Water attracted to water. |
| Adhesion | An attraction between different substances. |
| Solution | A mixture in which 2 or more substances are uniformly distributed in another substance. |
| Solute | The substance dissolved in the solution. |
| Solvent | The substance in which the solute is dissolved. |
| Water | The universal solvent. |
| Acids | Release hydrogen ions in solution. |
| Bases | Release hydroxide ions in solution. |
| Buffer | Neutralize small amounts of either an acid or base added to a solution. |
