| inorganic | not having the structure/organization characteristics of living bodies |
| mineral | any class of substance occuring in nature |
| silicates | any of the largest groups of mineral compounds |
| cleavage | tendency of crystals/minerals to break in preffered directions |
| crystallization | to give definite or concrete form |
| igneous rock | rocks formed by cooling and solidifying of molten materials |
| metamorphic rock | rock that was one formed then change to another under the influence of heat/pressure |
| metamorphism | change in the stucture/constitution of a rock due to natural causes |
| precipitate | to fall to the earth's surface as a condenced form of water |
| rock cycle | continous process in which rocks are created, change form, destroyed, then form again |
| density | compactness/closely set or crowded |
| fracture | to break or crack |
| hardness | refuse or coarser parts |
| luster | state/quality of shining by reflecting light |
| streak | long/narrow mark/streak of color |
| lava | molten, fluid rock that comes from a volcanoe |
| sediment | mineral/organic matter deposited by water |
| sedimentary rock | rock that is formed through deposition and solidification of sediment |
| sedimentation | the depostion/accumulation of sediment |
| extrusive | noting to a class of igneous rocks that have been forced out in a molten/plastic condition |
| intrusive | having been forced between preexisting rocks or rock layers |
| volcanic rock | rock formed from magma erupted from a volcano |
| magma | molten material beneath or within the earth's crust from which igneous rock was formed |
| rock | mineral matter of variable composition |
| vein | a streak or marking of a different color |
| gemstone | precious/semiprecious stone that can be cut and polished |
| ore | metal-bearing mineral or rock |
| ore deposit | mineral deposit that is sufficiently rich to be worked at a profit |
| cementation | heating of two substances in contact in order to effect some change in one of them |
| lithification | process by which unconsolidated materials are converted into coherent solid rock |
| organic | relating to the basic constitution or structure of a thing |
| foliation | act of putting forth leaves |
