identify that protons determine an element’s identity and valence electrons...
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Protons | a subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is located in the nucleus of an atom; the number of protons in the nucleus is the atomic number, which determines the identity of an element. |
Element | substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. An element is composed of atoms that have the same atomic number, that is, each atom has the same number of protons in its nucleus as all other atoms of that element. |
Chemical property | is any of a material's properties that becomes evident during, or after, a chemical reaction; that is, any quality that can be established only by changing a substance's chemical identity. |
Reactivity | is the tendency of a substance to undergo chemical reaction, either by itself or with other materials, and to release energy. |
Valence electrons | re the electrons in the outer shell of an atom. The valence electrons are the ones involved in forming bonds to adjacent atoms. |
Reactive | a substance that changes when it is mixed with another substance |
Chemical reactivity | the tendency of a substance to undergo chemical reaction, either by itself or with other materials, and to release energy |
Atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element. |
Element | cannot be broken down into more fundamental substances |
Nucleus | in physical science, an atom's central region, which is made up of protons and neutrons. |
Property | things that distinguish the difference between matters eg: solids - Cannot be compressed, does not take the shape of container etc. |
React | is used to describe what happens when two substances combine and cause a chemical change in each other. |
