soil a loose mixture of rock fragments, organic material, water, and air that can support the growth of vegetation (plants)
parent rock a rock formation that is the source of soil
bedrock the layer of rock beneath soil
soil texture the soil quality that is based on proportions of soil particles
soil structure the arrangement of soil particles
humus the dark, organic material formed in soil from the decayed remains of plants and animals
leaching the removal of substances that can be dissolved from rock, ore, or layers of soil due to the passing of water
O layer has a lot of decaying leaves and twigs. Very dark in color. Very rich in humus. Very few rocks. Part of topsoil.
A layer Also part of the topsoil. Material from the O layer leaches down into this layer. Dark in color. Mostly humus & weathered clay. Very few rocks.
B layer VERY LITTLE humus. Lighter in color. More clay and small rocks than upper layers.
C layer Almost no humus. Mostly clay, sand, and larger broken-off pieces of bedrock.
decomposers organisms that break down the remains of dead plants and animals.
litter The loose layer of leaves or plant remains on the ground.
