Weather Watch vocabulary

TermDefinition
Temperature a measure of the average movement of particles of matter
Relative Humidity measure of the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the maximum possible amount that air can hold at a particular temperature
Precipitation water that falls to the ground as rain, snow, hail, or sleet
Degrees Fahrenheit a unit of measurement for temperature abbreviated as F
Degrees Celsius a unit of measurement for temperature as C
Air Pressure a measure of the force that air exerts on each square inch of a surface
Barometer an instrument used to measure air pressure
Wind the movement of air
Climate the normal weather conditions of a region, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years
Rain Gauge a tool used to measure precipitation
Liquid matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape; takes the shape of its container
Anemometer an instrument used to measure wind speed
Wind Vane a tool used for measuring wind direction
Climate Region a region of the United States assigned to a NOAA Regional Climate Center
Front the area where two air masses collide
Air Mass a large volume of air with similar characteristics of temperature, air pressure, and humidity throughout
Warm Front occurs when a particularly warm air mass meets a cooler air mass
Cold Front occurs when a particularly cold air mass meets a warmer air mass
Occluded Front occurs when a cold front catches up to a warm front and overtakes it
Stationary Front when a cold front meets a warm front and no movement occurs
