Environmental Water

Water sources and problems vocab

TermDefinition
Groundwater 0.67% of earth's water that is found beneath the earth's surface.
Water Vapor Gas form of water found in the atmosphere
Source of River The origin of the river.
Runoff Precipitation that flows down elevated surfaces.
Fertilizer Salt used to help plants grow.
Pesticides Salts used to kill pest like bugs.
Herbicides Salts used to kill plants like weeds
Nitrates and Phosphates Chemicals that are in fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and waste that end up in farm runoff which can cause algal blooms in rivers, lakes and streams.
Algal Bloom An increase in the growth of algae caused by nitrates and phosphates in farm runoff. It can cause the increase of bacteria which causes hypoxia which causes fish kills.
Fish Kills A large amount of deceased fish caused by pollution and other environmental problems like algal blooms and hypoxia.
Neuse River A polluted river that is in North Carolina.This river has a history of fish kills and other environmental problems.
River Basin The area around a river
Condensation The part of the water cycle where water vapor is cooled back into liquid form and creates clouds.
Evaporation The part of the water cycle that heats up water on earths surface and turns it into gas form so it rises up.
Transpiration The part of the water cycle where water is evaporated from plants.
Infiltration The part of the water cycle where water seeps into the cracks of the ground and flows into ground water.
Precipitation The part of the water cycle where the condensation in clouds becomes too heavy and falls down as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
pH How acidic, basic, or neutral a substance is.
Dissolved Oxygen The measure of how much oxygen has been dissolved in water.
Hypoxia When there is a low amount of oxygen in rivers. This is caused by nitrates and phosphates that cause algal blooms that cause and increase of bacteria which takes away oxygen.
Turbidity How cloudy water is.
